Remembering Judge Deborah Batts

I just heard that Senior U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts died unexpectedly a few days ago.  (Story in the New York Times here.)  We both clerked for the same federal judge, Lawrence W. Piece, a few years apart, and I believe she and Judge Pierce remained close over the years.  In addition to authoring a number of I.P. related opinions over the years, including the district court opinion in Salinger v. Colting, Judge Batts also served as a law professor at Fordham and was the first openly gay federal judge in the U.S.  Rest in peace, Judge Batts.
